Winsor School Cross Country Wins Canterbury Invitational
9/21/16

Winsor Cross Country won the Division I Canterbury Invitational on Saturday, September 21, 2019. This is Winsor's first team win since 2016. Meg Madison '24 won the race in a school record time of 18:33 and became Winsor's first Canterbury champion!

Meg was followed by co-captain Winnie Wang '20, Eve Lesburg '21, co-captain Indi Aufranc '20, and Zoe Lewis '22, who all finished in the top 20.

Winsor's score of 46 points bested Newton Country Day School, Hopkins, Loomis Chaffee, Deerfield, and Greenwich Academy.

Read on for a race synopsis from Head Coach Moriah Musto:

On a warm Saturday Winsor XC sent 7 runners to compete in New Milford, CT at the Canterbury Invitational. Winsor has finished in the top 3 teams every single year we have attended and we went into this race optimistic and excited.

When the gun went off Meg Madison and a Deerfield runner immediately ran to the front. A group of Greenwich Academy runners also swarmed the front as did a few runners from several other D1 programs and EIL opponent NCDS. Winnie and Indi were both in the top 20 with Eve and Zoe not too far behind and then Kate McCurley '21 and Anjali Palepu '21 chasing.

By the one mile mark, nearly every Winsor runner had moved up: Meg was in firm control of the race and Winnie had worked her way into the top 10. The Winsor runners worked "the woods" and "the hill" (fans should be aware it's called "Agony Hill") and showed we would be the team to beat. Meg continued to widen her lead and finished with a sparkling 18:33, the fastest time in Winsor school history and our first Canterbury Champion! Bravo Meg! She was followed by Winnie who finished 5th and Eve who had a monster finish to land in 9th. Rounding out Winsor's scorers were Indi in 15th and Zoe in 19th -- a huge feat to place all scorers in the top 20! Kate and Anjali ran strong races to finish in front of scoring runners from most schools in attendance.

When the scores were tallied Winsor had bested the field with a low score of 46 points, our first win since 2016! Congratulations to the entire team and a special kudos to Winnie and Indi who each had their highest Canterbury finishes this year -- boding very well for their senior XC seasons! Thank you to each and every fan who cheered for Winsor throughout the race -- we truly appreciate your support of Winsor XC.
